Fellow’s Parlour

This project involved the extension and refurbishment of a Grade I listed building at Trinity College, Cambridge, for the Fellow's Parlour to provide contemporary accommodation for academic use. Designed by Paul King during his time at Ian Simpson Architects, the proposal carefully integrates new architectural interventions within one of Cambridge's most significant heritage settings.

A principal aim of the scheme was to improve the functionality and environmental quality of the existing spaces while preserving the architectural and historic significance of the listed building. The design introduces sensitively detailed new elements that strengthen the relationship between the existing structure and its surrounding context, maximising natural light and improving circulation without compromising the building's historic character.

The intervention balances contemporary architectural expression with rigorous conservation principles, retaining significant historic fabric while incorporating high-quality modern materials and detailing. Every aspect of the design was carefully considered to ensure the extension complements the original building, respecting its scale, craftsmanship, and heritage significance.

The completed project provides an elegant and discreet addition that supports the evolving needs of Trinity College while celebrating the exceptional architectural character of the existing building. The scheme demonstrates how contemporary design can successfully coexist with nationally significant historic architecture through careful analysis, sensitive detailing, and a considered architectural approach.
