This project involved the design of a residential apartment development in Altrincham, combining the conversion of an existing building with a sensitively integrated new-build element to create high-quality contemporary homes. Designed by Paul King while working at Urban Splash Architects, the scheme sought to maximise the potential of the site while responding to its urban context and existing architectural character.
A key objective of the design was to retain and repurpose the existing structure while introducing new accommodation that complements the original building. Careful spatial planning and the integration of generous south-facing glazing, private amenity spaces create bright, dual-aspect apartments that support modern residential living.
The proposal balances the conservation of existing architectural features with contemporary design principles, using a restrained palette of materials and carefully detailed new interventions to establish a cohesive relationship between old and new. Sustainability, natural light, and efficient layouts were central considerations throughout the design process, ensuring the apartments provide comfortable and adaptable living environments.
The completed development delivers a distinctive residential scheme that revitalises the site while contributing positively to the character of Altrincham. By combining sensitive conversion with high-quality new architecture, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can successfully transform existing buildings into vibrant, contemporary homes.
